What is PRI?

The Postural Restoration Institute (PRI) is built around 30 years of clinical practice associated with recurring successes of specific patient treatment programs. We established reproducible, outcome-based programs based on consistent, evidence-based correlations, discovered with patient biomechanical, respiratory, and neurological functional patterns and limitations. The founder, Ron Hruska's, passion for the integrated systems of the body has resulted in an examination and intervention process of the asymmetrical human body called Postural Restoration.

Rave Review for Postural Restoration-Inspired Yoga

A student's recent review makes us beam from ear-to-ear:

In an overwhelming majority of yoga classes the instruction is akin to a GPS.  A smooth and soothing voice guides step by step, turn by turn as the class follows where it is led.  The PRI yoga class more closely resembles the study of an atlas before a journey. The destination is specific.  The route is clearly outlined.  The terrain of the human body is discussed.  Landmarks are identified as are potential impediments. The students begin the physical portion of the class already educated. It is a class taught not by rote but with intent, each student well prepared to navigate their own bodies.

In PRI yoga the fusion of fresh knowledge and ancient practice creates a class both efficient and rewarding.  The clear and specific cause and effect nature of PRI is complemented by the fluidity of the yoga routine.  It allows for immediate application of principles in a context separate from straightforward classroom exercise.  The class can feel what it is to properly align the body while engaging in motions that mirror those common to daily living.  In this way correct alignment can be felt while the body is fully engaged.  It is this physical understanding which enables students to quickly absorb and maintain posture and other principles of PRI until it becomes the natural state.

Thanks to Molly T. for this beautifully written and glowing review!

Breathing easy?

Every client we work with at Shine has room for improvement with respect to their breathing. Many of them have unconsciously altered their breathing from chronic pain, clothing restraints, stress, or poor posture. Many more have been taught to breath erroneously by well-meaning friends or professionals. Altered breathing can not only hinder healing, but it also induces more stress, anxiety, and painful posture. Try this simple practice to bring your diaphragmatic breathing back into balance:

RATIO BREATHING:

First, rest in a comfortable position (preferably with your entire body supported, such as in bed or a recliner). Place pillows under your knees to invite your lower back to relax.

Next, place one hand on your breastbone and one hand on your abdomen. Notice what is happening for a few moments. Observe the movement in these areas, sense the quality of the expansion and relaxation as your breath moves in and out. Soften the places that do not need to work (neck, shoulders, face) at this time.

Once you have a sense of the quality of your breath, begin to count the length of your inhale and of your exhale. If there is a pause between them, count that, too. For example, inhale 3 seconds, exhale 4 seconds, pause 2 seconds.

The practice itself is simply continuing to count the length of the inhale, exhale, and pause(s). You may notice that as you relax into this observation, your exhale naturally lengthens and pauses develop between your breaths.

Side effects include: feeling more calm, energized, refreshed, stable, and centered. You may even come to realize that you don't have to "do" anything to breathe... let your breath breathe you.

Postural Restoration Certification for Dr. Emily and her clinic

On December 11, 2012 in Lincoln, NE  the Postural Restoration Institute® announced the certification of Emily Soiney, PT, DPT, RYT, CST, PRC. To be Postural Restoration Certified (PRC), Emily has completed multiple advanced PRI courses, demonstrated a thorough understanding of the science through completion of the PRC application, and successfully participated in both clinical and analytical testing.  Since the certification process began in 2004, 80 therapists have earned the designation of Postural Restoration Certified (PRC) under the direction of Ron Hruska, MPA, PT.

The Postural Restoration Institute® established this certification process as a way to recognize and identify individuals with advanced training, extraordinary interest and devotion to the science of postural adaptations, asymmetrical patterns and the influence of polyarticular chains of muscles on the human body as defined by the Postural Restoration Institute®.

PRC therapists offer a unique approach to physical medicine called Postural Restoration. This approach addresses underlying biomechanics which can often lead to symptoms of pain and dysfunction. All mechanical influences on the body that restrict movement and contribute to improper joint and muscle position are considered, examined, and assessed. Manual and non-manual techniques are utilized to restore proper alignment of the body while proper respiratory dynamics are considered. Treatment encompasses prevention and lifetime integration for long-term successful outcomes.
